the characters

meet the family

the Kaiary family — becca, riley, lily, jackson, and grandma jane — star in our storybook films about the chaos and sweetness of the little moments.

watercolor portrait of becca, mom of two, holding a phone and a small leaf

becca

the chronicler. mom of two. types fast, cries faster.

becca writes the lines down before she forgets them, which is usually within the hour. she runs the family group chat, mistypes half the names on purpose, and keeps a list called 'things she said today' that nobody else is allowed to read.

favorite moment:

lily, age 3, holding a leaf: 'this is the mom leaf and these are her babies.'

watercolor portrait of riley, a dad in an apron flipping a slightly misshapen pancake

riley

the dad of small bargains. pancake operator.

riley negotiates with toddlers and loses on principle. he makes pancakes that are technically pancakes, builds blanket forts with structural opinions, and remembers every weird thing the kids say in the car.

favorite moment:

jackson, age 2, very serious: 'dad. the floor is also a chair.'

watercolor portrait of lily, a four-year-old in a red cape holding a banana

lily

the four-year-old in charge. inventor of banannna.

lily names every stuffed animal twice and runs the household weather. she is the reason Kaiary exists, the reason Kaiary is called Kaiary, and the reason the word banana has three n's in our house now.

favorite moment:

the morning she announced: 'today i am wearing a cape because today is a cape.'

watercolor portrait of jackson, a two-year-old holding one sock and frowning

jackson

the two-year-old experiment. third-person narrator.

jackson eats one orange thing and throws the second. he narrates his own life in the third person, grieves small losses with full conviction, and has opinions about socks that we are still trying to understand.

favorite moment:

'jackson is sad. jackson is sad because the sock is wrong.' (the sock was fine.)

watercolor portrait of grandma jane in a cardigan holding a coffee mug and a phone

grandma jane

the saturday morning archivist. extended-family viewer.

grandma jane opens the gallery first thing on saturday with her coffee. she screenshots the good ones, prints two of them a month, and has never once accidentally tapped the wrong button — because there is only one button to tap.

favorite moment:

the voice clip of lily singing happy birthday to a pinecone. saved. printed. framed.
